Basic facts about the Sioux Indians and their lives in the early 1800's are presented in a straightforward way. Their nomadic lifestyle is described, including the materials and structures of tepees and the tribe's dependence on the buffalo. Nothing of the buffalo was wasted. In addition to serving as the main source of their food supply, needles were made of bones and sinew became thread for sewing. Cups and spoons were made of horns and the stomach of the buffalo could be used for pots and for food storage. Activities of childhood, such as learning to swim and ride horses, are followed with accounts of the rites into adulthood, courting practices, and marriage rituals. Religious beliefs and worship were integral parts of the everyday lives of the Sioux.
