In 1939 at age 15, Freda Teitelbaum, along with her mother and younger sister, fled Vienna. After Austria's annexation to Germany in March 1938, the nation's Jews were denied the right to earn a living, attend public schools, or even to sit on a park bench. Jewish men were arrested and sent to concentration camps. Freda and her mother and sister sailed to New York, and her father and grandparents followed a few months later. In 1983 Teitelbaum and her daughter returned to Vienna for a visit. Her book is the story of growing up as a Jew in Vienna, her life in New York City as a refugee, her later life in Chicago, and her return to Vienna 44 years later. Without a trace of bitterness, Teitelbaum has written a straightforward account of her interrupted childhood and a world forever lost. George Cohen
