John Romer's book contains two fascinating and vividly written stories. The first is that of the tombs in which the Egyptian kings, queens, and nobles of three dynasties were buried with extraordinary pomp and extravagance between 1570 and 1085 BC. The second, equally exciting and full of incident, is the story of the travelers and archeologists of recent centuries and their hunt for the mysterious past of ancient Egypt. The complete account of the intrigues, rivalries, and dedication of the European archeologists has not previously been told.
