Madness and horror have obsessed my life. The books I have written are not about anything else. After The Adversary, I couldn't take it anymore. I wanted to escape it. I thought I could escape it by loving a woman and carrying out an investigation. The investigation focused on my maternal grandfather, who after a tragic life passed away in the fall of 1944 and, most likely, was executed for collaborative acts. It's the secret of my mother, the ghost that haunts our family. To exorcise this ghost, I followed hazardous paths. They took me to a small remote town in the Russian province where I stayed a long time, on the lookout, waiting for something to happen. And something happened: an atrocious crime. Madness and horror overtook me. They caught up with me, at the same time, in my love life. I wrote an erotic story for the woman I loved that had to break into the real world, and the real thwarted my plans. It threw us into a nightmare that looked like the worst of my books and that devastated our lives and our love. This is what we are talking about here: the scenarios that we develop to master the real and the terrible way in which the real goes about responding to us.
