A collection of 15 narratives of participants of various famous and obscure events of the American Western frontier. Dating from 1835 to the turn of the century. The material seems to have been selected mainly for sensational impact. Among the incidents recounted are the travails of the Donner party, the defeat of Custer at Little Bighorn, and the final days of Billy the Kid. Some historical information has been provided for each narrative, but on the whole, little analysis or broad context is included. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
