In January 1984 Wendy Shaull set out across the mountains to meet the rebel forces in El Salvador. Eager to understand how a guerrilla war, the consequence of over 50 years of military dictatorships, was lived, and with her project approved by the FMLN guerillas, she arrived in the war zones. She stayed for a year. Little journalism has been written to try to understand the other side - to go to the heart of the struggle, far from colleagues, from hotels. No other "foreign" journalist has spent so long with rebels, anywhere in the world. Wendy Shaull found it hard and lonely, but she emerged 11 months later to tell an unknown secret...of war and death; of courage, endurance, and everyday life, depicted here in both worlds and pictures.
