Toki Tori's gameplay is a hybrid of two genres. While it appears to be a platform game, it is a puzzle game at heart. To advance in the game, the player must collect each egg in a level using a limited number of tools. Therefore, players must look ahead and plan carefully when using items like the Telewarp, Freeze-o-Matic, and InstantRockTM. Enemies usually appear after a simple patrol of walking back and forth and turning when they encounter an obstacle. Some tools are weapons that can defeat these monsters; however, they must be used wisely to complete the level. In addition to the threat of monsters, a timer is constantly ticking. When the timer runs out, the player must restart the level.
