Whether it’s how seeds disperse and land slowly on the ground, or whether it is how the air force drops consignments of food and aid in regions devastated by natural calamities, or whether it’s how a jelly fish swims; both natural and man-made creations take full advantage of air resistance and drag for their benefit. By creating an “umbrella” that’s light and has a large surface area, one can use any fluid to control one’s motion through that fluid. Here, we make parachutes out of plastic sheets to observe how air resistance can temper the force of gravity to allow objects to fall gently to the ground.Bonus: Flick Knife: Make a switch knife using three ice cream sticks and two rubber bands. Make notches on the sticks so that the rubber bands don't slip.
