Thermometers are very useful devices in the everyday world. We already know a couple of the most basic uses: to measure body temperature, and of course all weather stations need it. Other than this, the thermometer has many other applications. They are used in roadways in cold weather to help determine if icing conditions exist for safety reasons. They are used in air conditioners, freezers, heaters and fridges for climate control conditions. They play a huge role in nuclear power facilities to measure the temperature of reactors so that it doesn’t result in a nuclear meltdown. So without thermometers, we might not have been able to prevent the rotting of food, we wouldn’t have any ACs and we could possibly destroy a whole town. Thermometers come in various garbs: mercury, electronic, alcohol etc. Here, we make one using only water and some colouring agent! Can you calibrate it and use it to calculate the daily maximum and minimum temperature in your town? Bonus: Thermal conductivity. Heat some water in a glass or beaker/pan. Place items made of different materials in it, with some part of them sticking out, e.g. metal spoon, comb, wooden stick, copper wire etc. Let them stay for a few min and "feel" the temperature after by measuring the time it takes to melt butter kept on the ends!
