Best remembered for her nursing activities in the Crimean War, Mary Seacole was also a traveller, businesswoman, doctor and gold prospector. Her autobiography, first published in 1857, gives a rare insight into the Victorian world from the perspective of a black British woman born into slavery in Jamaica.
