   Description
In May 1945, The USS Sutton captured the U-234, a giant Nazi U-Boat, which was heading for Japan with enough highly enriched uranium for five nuclear bombs and a trove of infrared detonators for such bombs. This windfall was appropriated by the government's own Manhattan Project, enabling it to keep its own original bomb schedule which had fallen far behind. Manhattan had the entire government file classified Top Secret and removed from the record, so the U-234 matter is little known. This may be the most complete and accurate account.
