   Description
This book is a companion to the 1992-1993 Whitney Museum Independent Study Program organized by the Helena Rubinstein Foundation and held June 23- August 29, 1993. This exhibition investigates rape as an actual violation committed by one person on another through seemingly sexualized violence. As such stranger rape, acquaintance rape and incestuous abuse all figure as appropriate areas of discussion. Earlier feminist anti=rape movements embraced an understanding of rape wherein metaphorical rape - verbal abuse, manipulations of power, and legalistic, media, or social practices -were included in the topic of the discussion. Influenced by feminist theory of the past few years, we have chosen to move away from such a metaphorical understanding to avoid confusing these instances with the real event of rape as experienced by real bodies in real lives. Contents: More Than Confessional: Testimonial and the Subject of Rape by Hannah J. L. Feldman; A Shift in Strategies Depicting Rape in Feminist Art by Hannah Kruse; Entrapment by Jennifer Kabat; Tall Tales and True Stories: The Subject of Rape in Recent Video Art by Monica Chau. with over 20 black and white illustrations
