   Description
Martha’s anti-slavery father, dragged away by Home Guard in North Carolina during the Civil War to be shot, is saved at the last moment. George’s Indiana siblings die of dysentery. Both families move to the Iowa prairie in the 1860’s. We follow these pioneers through WW I, flu epidemic, prohibition and losing their beloved farm, ‘The Maples’. Interspersed are stories of outlaws, a brothel, adventuresome cousins and George’s earliest American ancestor, Martin, who came to Pennsylvania in 1727. From this era are stories of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars and of Theophilus Hauser and his slave, Bethania and their descendants.
