To indicate who the Shans are and where they are at the present time, it may not be amiss to slip in here a few paragraphs from well-known writers. Though these quota tions are familiar to us all, it may be handy to have them here for ready reference. Moreover, if the following pages are read in the light of these facts, it may help in removing Obscurities and in giving at least plausibility to statements that otherwise might seem unreasonable or far-fetched.
