The literary memoirs of Laura (Riding) Jackson, written between 1972 and her death in 1991, provide illuminating reflections on her experience of the literary world from the nineteen twenties to the nineteen eighties, and important evaluations of particular literary figures and movements, and of literature itself. These memoirs extend the new course that her writing and thinking was freed to take following her renunciation, in 1941, of poetry and its constrictions .
