He served as a corporal in the 1st Oregon Volunteer Infantry during the closing months of the Civil War. Transfer of regular Army troops from posts in the Oregon Country to the battlefields of the South and East had left settlers and travelers in the Pacific Northwest unprotected from Indians and outlaw bands and the region susceptible to revolution.
