Hailed around the world as a transition to democracy, the relaxation of military rule in Burma/Myanmar in 2011 and the election of Aung San Suu Kyi the following year proved short-lived. As a former diplomat and presidential advisor, Thant Myint-U understood the fragility of this apparent progress.
