This is the story of Peter Bauer, a fictional character, who experiences life in the historical settings of the American Revolutionary War. Although his encounters are those of a drummer boy of the Hessian Ditfurth Regiment, his actions and reactions are much like those of any other youngster from anywhere around the world at the tender age of ten. Readers are invited to follow Peter from his life on the family farm in Germany, to his long voyage across the Atlantic in 1776, to the Battle of Rhode Island—a time when survival took on a greater meaning than victory or defeat, and finally, to his return home and to civilian life eight years later.
