This narrative of the visit of Grand Duke Alexis of Russia to the United States has been read by relatively few people. One of the least know periods in the life of the Custers is that of their hiatus in Kentucky in 1871-82. But just a s important and equally obscure is the record of Custer's experiences in accompanying the Grand Duke to New Orleans.
