This guidebook introduces you to the island of Monhegan as it was painted by those who made up its first artists' colony in the early decades of the 20th century. With its 25 vintage photographs the book shows the reader or visitor the sites where the artists created the masterpieces of the golden age of plein air painting on Monhegan Island. The author was able to find much the same vantage points as those from which the artists painted, gives directions to the painting sites and relates anecdotes about the artists and the island. There are 20 illustrations of paintings representative of the many outstanding painters-George Bellows, Robert Henri, Rockwell Kent, and Edward Hopper-who found inspiration here.
