The gods of guilt is the fifth instalment in the famous mickey haller series by michael connelly. The mickey haller series is also known as the famous the lincoln lawyer series. This is due to mickey haller's preference to have his office in the back of his chauffeured lincoln town car. Mickey haller, a los angeles county based criminal defence attorney, is known for his unorthodox ideals of approaching the legal system by prioritising pragmatism over idealism. It leads him to rather uncomfortable and dangerous situations and puts him at odds with his own family. The gods of guilt starts off with mickey haller getting a text saying "call me asap- 187". It is the california penal code for murder and it immediately catches his attention. Murder cases provide the toughest of challenges and the fattest cheque payments and being the kind of man he is, mickey decides to up his game. But on investigation, turbulent information surface that troubles mickey. The victim, a very high-class prostitute called giselle dallinger, was actually one of haller's former clients, gloria dayton, whom he believed he had saved from the slave life and given a new lease of life and freedom. Mickey can't help but feel responsible. Further investigation reveals that she was back in town and back in the old business. Now things point towards mickey as the cause for her apparent demise, which pushes the lawyer to the edges of guilt. But everything about the case reeks of deceit and conspiracy. Haller's approach to clear his conscience is to develop a trustworthy parallel crime-theory rather than uncovering the truth.
