The Enlightenment [first edition]

The 18th-century European Enlightenment marked the transition from the medieval world view to the dawn of the modern age. Philosophy undermined the entrenched authority of the Church; reason and the scientific method challenged ignorance, superstition, and dogma; and popular demands for human rights and democracy rose up against the tyranny of autocratic monarchs.
