Was I ever surprised, having been coming to the Penobscot River region since the 1950s plus owning property on Verona Island, to learn of American patriot’s terrific Naval defeat in 1779 at the hands of the British during the revolutionary War. I would have had a front row seat from which to watch the battle unfold had I been sitting on my Verona beach on August 14th in 1779! I was even more surprised to learn that my grandparent’s farm would be in “New Ireland” – not in Maine or New England, if the American Patriots had not won both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. My grandparent’s property fronts on the Penobscot River and a few years ago, thanks to Google Earth, I was able to detect the outline of a sunken ship in the mud at the river’s edge. Could it be one of the 44 ships of the Expedition? Researching and assembling the information to be presented here was educational, interesting and very enjoyable. I sincerely hope you will find it so as well.
