First printing of this retelling of the beloved Japanese folktale of a baby found inside a bamboo reed. British illustrator and animator Errol Le Caine imbued his art with whimsy, style, and "a certain strangeness" that gives it a unique atmosphere (Hunt). He incorporated various aesthetics into his work depending on the subject of the book he was illustrating, and was particularly well-known for his illuminated manuscript-like compositions.
