1992, hardcover edition. This is the first book publication of a doctoral dissertation presented at the University of Oslo in 1985. This first book publication, State University of New York Press, Albany, is a revised version of the author's dissertation. 221 pages. John Gardner died in September of 1982 in a motorcycle accident. He was 49 years old at the time and had definitely entered the literary establishment. His books, On Moral Fiction, The Resurrection, The Wreckage of Agathon, Nickel Mountain, and other works had, at the time of his death, found their way into various college lit classes.
