   Description
In this unusual Book, Wang Hui-Ming has translated a cycle of ten poems by Mao Tse-tung which concern historical incidents in the Chinese Revolution, especially the Long March into Northwestern China during the 1930s. The work is distinguished by the inclusion of reproductions of Mao's original calligraphy. "Ten Poems and Lyrics" by Mao Tse-tung will be of special interest to students of Chinese. Each poem appears in Chinese characters, romanization, and a line-by-line translation intended to help a reader form his own graphic image of the poem. He can then check the final poetic rendering against his own impression of the poem from the literal translation. Seeing Chinese poetry as a "graphic presentation of a poetic situation," artist Wang Hui-Ming conveys what the poems say, rather than what they mean. He succeeds in capturing the spirit of the original, as well as in creating poems in these translations. Mr. Wang, an "artist who loves poetry," contributes a woodcut illustration to this volume. He is the author of "The Land on the Tip of a Hair: Poems in Wood", "The Boat Untied and Other Poems", a folio of woodengravings, and "The Birds and Animals", a folio of woodcuts based on the poems of Po Chu-I. He also is the illustrator of "Jumping Out of Bed" by Robert Bly. Wang Hui-Ming teaches in the Department of Art at the University of Massachusetts.
