Gr. 9-12. Opposing Viewpoints books are mainstays of libraries that work with young adults. Although the volumes are excellent sources of current material on newsworthy issues, they generally offer only cursory background information. This title in the new American Social Movements series provides a more thorough historical overview. Editor Barton has collected 22 excerpts from landmark writings on the utilization and preservation of nature from contributors ranging from Emerson, Thoreau, and Theodore Roosevelt to Al Gore. Selections cover topics as diverse as the population explosion, humanity's innate need for wilderness areas, the Gaia concept, and the Green Movement. Students seeking authoritative primary and secondary sources on the development of the environmental movement will find this readable and a useful research tool.
