This technique is mainly used in manga and comics to apply tones, shadows and patterns. The number of lines corresponds to the number of dots in each row or column, the percentage is the amount of ink injected per inch equivalent to the grayscale. This method was implemented to reduce costs by printing only with black ink; when the dots are small enough, an optical illusion is created in which the eye interprets the patterned areas as a smooth grayscale.
