Benjamin Huger was possibly one of the greatest commanders of heavy weapons in the history of American warfare. In the Mexican War he commanded both the artillery and the ordnance, and he was the most esteemed South Carolinian in the United States Army before the Civil War. Huger was also the most maligned general in the Confederacy.
