Sally, Where Are You

Eyes like olives with white centers are all that readers glimpse of Sally, who hides behind doors, peers out from under covers and struggles into the nightgown belonging to the narrator, who is probably her mother. The narrator tires of Sally's game and yells at her, but when those eyes make a puddle of tears, the girl gets a kiss (referred to in the text) and all is wellfor the moment. Bright colors and shapes and only the barest hint of action will give young children a first look at fairly abstract illustrations. The interplay between the text (searching) and the eyes (hiding) is well paced; the adage "less is more" finds favor in this tidily packaged book. Ages 2-4.
