In the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), in the far east of Siberia, lives a genetically unique breed of domestic cattle (Bos taurus), the Yakutian Cattle. Siberian nature has exerted a powerful influence on the evolution of the Yakutian Cattle. These cattle have adapted to the extreme environmental conditions, the cold dark winters, the short summers and light nights and the fodder plants native to their northern homeland. The relationship with the Yakutian Cattle has enabled the people of the region to inhabit this beautiful land of permafrost and live in the harsh environment of the world's coldest populated area. The population of Yakutian Cattle, about one thousand head, represents the last remnants of the Siberian Turano-Mongolian cattle type and is found in three northern villages in the Eveno-Bytantay district.
