The discovery that forms the basis for this novel was actually made in the author's own laboratory and represents a whole new way to enhance athletic performance. What it is and how it relates to cancer therapy are part of the mystery confronting the Irish runner Sean Rourke, the protagonist of the story, who must face rivals in Sydney who are surely using it. Dr. Fischer's expertise in science, athletics, and the workings of a major university-based medical research facility is clearly evident throughout and serves to make plausible a fascinating tale of murder, deception and international intrigue. His discovery could very well be used in the future to cheat in sports. Perhaps it is being used already.
