The Gilded Age by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner is a satirizing account of what they saw during the 1870s-1900s, in an era of massive social problems covered up by only a thin layer of gilding. With rapid economic growth, wages shot up attracting many skilled workers from Europe. Labor unions were on the rise while working for an 8 hour work day and against child labor as the South remained economically devastated. African Americans were being stripped of social and political power as there was a significant divide all across America.
