Ali (Said Taghmaoui), an Egyptian student, stays in London and dreams of making it big as a screenwriter. In a twist of fate, he is kicked out of his lodgings, is short on money and has an expiring visa. As he needs a place to stay, he ends up moving in with a group of interesting people, Mark (Rupert Graves), a photographer of gay erotica, Linda (Juliette Lewis), a young model and professional Marilyn Monroe impersonator, and Sarah (Anna Massey), a blind woman who thinks that Ali is a reincarnation of her long-dead Egyptian lover. As his life takes funny twists and turns, Ali must try harder to get an elusive British visa. His quest unexpectedly leads him to finding the love of his life.
