Gameplay As the player explores an abandoned home in search of his missing wife, the player assumes control of Ethan Winters. Even though Ethan lacks combat experience, he can defend himself against the Baker family, humanoid fungi known as the "Molded," mutated insects, and other estate residents by arming himself with a range of weaponry such as handguns, shotguns, flamethrowers, explosives, and chainsaws. He can deflect blows to lessen harm. Throughout various parts of the game, players must avoid being followed by Baker family members who, when fighting, can only be momentarily crippled. However, by using stealth or fleeing, one can avoid these encounters.
