The origin of the flower is in Mexico hence the name is Mexican Sunflower. It grows well & could reach a height of 6 Feet or more if provided proper space & care. It produces flowering, which are in abundance of very intense, dazzling orange flowers, each 6 to 8cm (2½ to 3½ in) inches across.Heat and drought tolerant, Blooms remain open for many days, making it an effective cut flower. Plant in full sun, remove dead-head, and enjoy blooms and butterflies all summer long. Tithonia loves the sun and is tolerant of hot summer weather and drought; it will also tolerate infertile soil and a fair amount of neglect, giving blooms for a long period. This plant grows well, provided it has space, if provided less space than the growth will be stunt still will bloom well. They are very easy to grow and perfect for new gardeners and children, need not much attention or care. The Mexican sunflower is one of the best flowers you can grow for attracting butterflies. In late summer, a stand of Tithonia may attract a half dozen or more butterfly species with one or more individuals on every single blossom!Sowing: Sow directly outdoors, at least 18” inch apart, otherwise plant have to struggle for space to grow, as this plants grow well & thick, space should be good between 2 plants. Keep the soil moist until it germinates. Each cycle from sowing to blooming will take about 60 days. Protect the plants from high winds and stake them -- this is particularly important in late summer and fall when they are tall and top-heavy. Deadheading during the summer keeps it in bloom through most of the season. It does not require additional care in sense of fertilizer or pesticides. Though for better result you can add cow dung or manure periodically or organic fertilizers, Anyways Tithonia will not care even if they are not being provided. Just ensure it gets enough sunlight for most of the day & water well with good drainage.Cut flowers:Mexican sunflower is beautiful in cut flower arrangements, but the flower heads are borne on fragile hollow peduncles (flower stems) that must be cut carefully with a sharp knife lest they bend and collapse. Pick flowers early in the day, but wait until the sun has dried the dew. Remove leaves that are low on the stem, leaving just two or three higher up, near the flower's face. Place the flowers in a bucket filled with water, and leave them to stand for several hours in a cool room before placing in a vase. Change the water every few days. Blooms can last up to a fortnight when kept in water. Summing Up Key Points:1) Place seeds in a soil ½ inch to 1 inch deep in normal soil, if required prepare soil by mixing cow dung or manure.2) Keep the soil moist & water well. Ensure the water is not logged.3) The location should be sunny where the plant will get 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight.
