When the Texas army surprised the Mexicans at San Jacinto in 1836, the Texans were shouting: "Remember Goliad! Remember the Alamo!" Americans have continued to remember the Alamo in film and print, but Goliad, where the Mexican army massacred at least 342 Texans under the command of Colonel Fannin, has been mostly ignored. Kathryn Stoner O'Connor challenges that omission with this book. She also discusses other areas glossed over by many histories of the period, such as the sufferings faced by the Mexican pioneers and the cooperation between early Irish colonists and the Mexican settlers. She also brings attention to the American-Texans' prejudice toward the already-established Mexican-Texans who wanted to fight for independence alongside them.
