With its ground-breaking use of photographs, "Picture Post" was Britain's most influential magazine between 1938 and 1957. Containing 250 of the magazine's photographs, taken by some of the leading photojournalists of the day, this book examines the experience of mid-20th-century women. It finds them at work - gutting fish, and as dancers, stenographers, fashion models, milliners and pioneer policewomen; and at home - raising large families, running a farm, or gracing an elegant drawing-room. It rejoices in the diversity of expression with which "Picture Post" depicted the lives of British women to its readers, through the work of women photographers such as Grace Robertson, the "glamour shots", and the finishing schools, greyhound tracks, ATS training camps and Land Army activities.
