Description
This book is a study of the moral philosophies of two of the most prominent ancient cultures, the Greeks and the Israelites. Apart from its formal subject matter, moral philosophy is a species of reflection on the nature and problems of human life. In the religious literature of the ancient Israelites a type of moral philosophy is affirmed which bears a remarkable parallel to the serious reflection on life found in the literature of the ancient Greeks. The Greek literature, however, is not considered to be primarily religious and certainly is not generally regarded as 'Scripture'. Thus the occasional reference to the Iliad or the Odyssey as the 'bible' of the early Greeks must be interpreted in a somewhat different manner than references to the strictly religious writings of the priests and prophets among the Israelites.
