The articles in this volume, edited by Sheila R. Canby, focus on individual Persian artists and the paintings associated with them. Presented chronologically, the articles discuss painters active in the fourteenth to seventeenth centuries and the nineteenth century. Because the general parameters of the field of Persian painting have long been established, the aim of the writers of this volume has been to put forth new scholarship on some of the best known artists of Iran. The brilliant palette and extraordinarily sensitive draughtsmanship of Persian painters through the centuries are amply evident in the many plates that are illustrated here. Since most Persian paintings on paper were earmarked for books or albums, a volume such as this does justice to the intimate experience of holding, perusing, and enjoying the art of the Persian painter. - From the dust jacket.
