Reishigumo
Blue barrel with white clouds, inspired by the form of Reishi mushrooms, known as the symbol of immortality. It is believed to be the cloud that appears as an omen of good fortune.
Asa-no-ha
Orange barrel with a gold hexagon design. Traditionally, a triangle has been regarded as a symbol that indicates protection against evil spirits, and so a hexagon is believed to have even stronger power to ward off evil.
Sakura Chirashi
Pink barrel with white flowers. Sakura is the Japanese word for cherry blossoms and is composed of 'sa' that refers to the god of rice fields and 'kura' that means a seat for the god. People believed that cherry blossoms signalled a year of good harvest. The symbolic flower of the spring also represents new beginnings, prosperity and good luck.
Ogi Chirashi
Black barrel with scattered folding fans. These fans represent prosperity and growth, and were traditionally used to ward off evil and bad fortune, as it was believed that gods lived in the fans.
Sayagata
Purple barrel with a geometric design. The Chinese character 'manji' is known to represent the universe in harmony and infinity in Buddhism. The Sayagata pattern features interlocking manji characters of a slightly modified form that symbolise unbroken continuity and conveys the hope for prosperity and longevity of a family.
Karakusa
Green barrel with a white spiral pattern. The pattern depicts ivy vines growing without being broken, which symbolised vitality, longevity and flourishing prosperity.
Yagasuri
The pattern features bird feathers attached to the tips of arrows used for archery, which are also associated with “hamaya,” or “arrows to ward off evil,” known as a lucky charm that wards off misfortune and brings happiness.
Sakura Tatewaku
A geometric pattern made of two vertical wavy lines resembling the rising of steam thought to be auspicious as they represent elevation of the spirit and good fortune.
Urokomon
The pattern is composed of a succession of isosceles triangles representing scales of dragons and snakes that are considered to be sacred creatures. It is also said to dispel demons that dwell in women and so the pattern has been widely used on kimono, obi belt and other accessories for kimono attire.
Ichimatsu
The checkered pattern is named after Sanogawa Ichimatsu, celebrated kabuki actor who wore striking costumes adorned with this pattern. The repeating pattern constructed of squares arranged alternately is known to represent prosperity of descendants and expansion of business.
Seigaiha
The geometric pattern depicting the crests of waves is thought to have originated in ancient Persia and introduced to Japan via the Silk Road during the Asuka period (592-710). The name comes from the pattern used in the costume for “Seigaiha (waves of the blue ocean)”.
