Les observations du télescope spatial Hubble ont brouillé les cartes. En effet, les nouvelles mesures qu'elles ont permises impliquent que les galaxies seraient plus jeunes que les étoiles qu'elles contiennent ! Comment résoudre un tel dilemme ? Jean-Pierre Petit passe en revue les diverses solutions imaginées : si certains plaident pour un hypothétique "pouvoir répulsif du vide", d'autres envisagent la cohabitation de deux univers, le nôtre et un "univers-ombre" (shadow universe). Soutenue par Green, Schwarz et le Prix Nobel Abdus Salam, cette proposition rejoint la thèse des "univers-jumeaux" de l'académicien russe Andréï Sakharov. D'où les singulières perspectives qui en découlent : les galaxies seraient logées dans les trous d'un gruyère invisible, constitué de "matière-ombre" qui les empêcherait d'éclater sous l'effet de la force centrifuge. L'interaction entre ces deux univers, récemment modélisée, expliquerait la structure en spirale des galaxies et l'origine des fameux quasars, ce qui prédirait une expansion cosmique turbulente.
