120 Inspirational Stories with Energetic Portraits of Survivors. New Beginnings: The Triumphs of 120 Cancer Survivors follows one hundred survivors who discovered that those words were the start of a new beginning, not an end to their lives. New Beginnings explores the question of what happens during the "silent phase" of cancer after treatment ends, when the flurry of treatment and doctors' appointments is replaced with a gaping silence. Even families and friends tend to see the conclusion of treatment as an "end." At this point, survivors are left on their own as they attempt to move forward. Having cancer, however, may actually be only the first stage, in the rest of your life. One of the survivors in the book, Rabbi Ed Feinstein put it this way: The way of healing is to balance the loss and fear and rage with a sense of gratitude. When they balance, we are whole . . . whether or not we are cured. New Beginnings is a collection of narratives and energetic photographic portraits of men, women, children, and families that inspire and provide hope for anyone diagnosed with cancer as well as for their families and friends. Jane E. Brody, the NY Times health columnist, wrote the introduction with prefaces by Peter Yarrow (of Peter, Paul & Mary), U.S. Congressman Henry Waxman, and Rabbi David Wolpe. Various endorsements are on the back of the jacket. The book has 272 pages with 160 full color photographs. This is a project by and for cancer survivors: their words, Bill Aron's photographs, in collaboration with their ideas and sensibilities. There are now 14 million cancer survivors in the United States. This is their book.
