Leaving a family troubled by mental dysfunction, illness and alcoholism, Anne Fangman finds security and solace with the Sisters of Mercy. During eight years in the convent, she earns a nursing degree while learning to think for herself. Gradually realizing she doesn’t have the true calling, she leaves the convent one month before taking final vows. She thrives for a year teaching nursing, then briefly joins the colorful Braniff International Airlines as a stewardess, hoping to balance her cloistered years with travel, glamour, and meeting men. Her actual calling—to be a nurse—is finally realized when she lands an assignment on the Hospital Ship HOPE. During voyages to South America and Sri Lanka, she finds both professional and personal challenge and adventure. Finally, that special man—the love of her life—turns out to be the love of several other women’s lives.
