The game is a single player action game released by EA, Electronic Arts. Mirror’s Edge has been developed by EA Digital Illusions CE or DICE and was announced for release on 2007. The PC version of the game released on January 2009. Illuminate Labs in association with DICE, developed the lighting effects in the game and other features that are rendered beautifully thanks to the all new Unreal Engine 3 that brings to life all the visual aspects of the game. The game Mirror’s Edge differs from most other FPS or First Person Shooters in many ways, for one thing, it is not a shooter primarily. There is very little if not any detailing on the HUD of the player and this allows for a more engaging game play. The player is able to make more varieties of moves like tumbling, sliding under barriers, wall running with enough momentum, and shimmying across ledges. The arms and legs of the character, Faith, are visible during motion and this, coupled with no HUD allows for a wider range of movement. The game has its setting in the dystopian future, where everything, including information is controlled by the government and the only way to safely transmit information privately, is by handing them to Runners, or acrobatic individuals who use the rooftops and high areas of the city to scurry across and deliver them to their destinations. These runners or couriers have to evade the government officials who are tasked with controlling and ceasing information and safely deliver them to the intended destination. As the player of the game Mirror’s Edge, you have to guide Faith, the protagonist across high rooftops, ledges, across walls, and ventilation shafts while negotiating obstacles using your special acrobatics. As Faith, you have to navigate the challenging skyline of a gleaming city by using the rooftops and other ledges to jump across and get from one building to another. The game is based on the discipline of Parkour and is one of the first digital representations of the discipline seen in video games. Parkour uses physical contact and momentum to navigate through areas previously thought impossible by making use of everything from gravity, to speed, momentum and friction to get a hold on any surface and use it for progression. The game follows proper motion as seen in parkour artists and this has been achieved in the game mechanics. The camera weaves and bobs like a real point of view angle and when rolls are executed, the camera angle also spins along with Faith’s body. Various other actions like hands pumping during jumps and steps being taken during leaps are also realistically depicted in the game. The game has a PEGI rating of 16. In Mirror’s Edge, momentum is everything. It is something to be conserved as it is necessary to perform a chain of events that can help propel Faith over great distances. If she loses momentum or loses it because of a poorly managed obstacle, Faith may fall off a ledge or even fall short of a jump, plummeting down to her death. The game also features Reaction Time, much like bullet time, where the world around Faith slows down just enough to allow the player to plan out their next move or attack in order to progress in the game and make a quick escape if needed.
