A full length biography and character study of Michel Ney, Napolean's marshall who came close to snatching victory from Wellington at Waterloo in 1815, has long been overdue. Raymond Horricks spent more than five years researching the marshal's life and a further two years writing the book. In Northern Europe, the Iberian Peninisula and in different parts of France he did much of his searchings where events actually happened, and apart from his new and radically different analysis of what actually made the man tick, has cleared up a number of mysteries about his early life, which in earlier writings about him were left to the reader's imagination or were sometimes ludicrous guesswork. This dark green, coloured, leather effect, hardbook, with lovely bold gilt title impressions running down the spine, is in reasonably good condition. Normal wear and marks apply consistent with use and age. Dust jacket included. Not price clipped, original prices still clear on inside of jacket. A few paint marks on front of jacket please image, no marks on back of jacket. Some shelf-life wear and marks. First published in 1982, first edition. All 283 pages intact, all pages, text and illustrations in good clean, readable order. This book often reads like a novel, however that was the nature of the marshall's life. As Berthier, Napolean's Chief of Staff, wrote of him, he was more like a figure from the age of Chivalry. An interesting book and perfect for anyone who loves biographies on historical figures.
