Long a source of information for those seeking to upgrade their engine room ratings, this book does not purport to include actual Coast Guard questions, but rather to test the reader's grasp of the fields covered by the endorsement examination leading to QMED -- Any Rating.In the fourth edition, more than 700 questions were added to better represent the range of subject matter and level of difficulty. Subsections are included for the ratings of pumpman (pumproom maintenance procedures); machinist (machine shop devices); deck engineer (machinery troubleshooting and procedures); junior engineer (bearings and lubrication, miscellaneous review, diesel review); and electrician (electrical review). Substantial expansion of the sections on maintenance and regulations for electricians; accessories and air-conditioning for refrigeration engineers; and pumping procedures and regulations and piping, pumps, and symbols for pumpmen makes the book more useful as examination preparation.
