Blending postbellum electricity with an off-beat Catholic pedigree, the Walkers take turns imparting the family history, bringing a whole new meaning to the term Southern Gothic. Siddalee, the eldest daughter, is at the centre of the narrative and with her customary flair and drama she recounts the family's more outlandish exploits, often involving her mother, Vivi, one of the legendary 'Ya-Ya's' whose reckless drinking, repressed rage and exuberance for life and love left an indelible mark on the young Walker's childhoods.
