We have to fight back. But we can't fight like they do. The Right's entertainment value comes from their willingness to lie and distort. Ours will have to come from being funny and attractive. Although I wrote this book in a spirit of dispassionate inquiry, I cannot expect my critics to respond in kind. My right-wing detractors will undoubtedly tell you that I'm 'abnoxious,' smug,' and a 'clear and present threat to our national security.' I will not stoop to dignify such calumny with a response, except to say that Conoleezza Riche should watch her mouth. Al Franken, one of our "savviest satirists" (People), has been studying the rehtoric of the Right. He has listed to their cries of "slander," "bias," and even "treason." He has examined the Bush administration's policies of squandering our surplus, ravaging the environment, and alienating the rest of the world. He's even watched Fox News. A lot.
