This is a chronology of major domestic and foreign policy events in the Soviet Union from 1917 through the Nazi attack in 1941. The author makes the best possible use of data in approximating dates which remain secret or unpublished. While no chronology can substitute for an interpretative analysis, deMobray includes information neglected in most Soviet histories--for example, the fact that in 1925 the Soviet Union was the first to acknowledge the conquest of Arabia by the House of Saud. Novice, if not seasoned, historians may also be surprised to learn that the first political show trial took place in 1922, during Lenin's lifetime. The chronology's reports of better-known events such as party congresses are necessarily less essential, but this work is of certain reference value for all larger Soviet collections.- Zachary T.
